An introduction to playing 15 Puzzle

Take a moment with 15 Puzzle before moving to another game. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Use the example below to understand a decision. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Look at what changes after your first action.

Practice beyond the first move

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your objective

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The order of play

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Using the playing area

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Learn from a sample situation

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Avoid this misunderstanding

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Compare the situation with the worked example. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
